The music video of the song ELEVATE by Robots of the 80s tells the story of a woman living in a reality where technology overtakes human labor and people struggle to find a fulfilling purpose. The story takes place at a time when humans start to give up on trying to fight back and reclaim their status. Their frustration leaves them homeless, hopeless and in a vegetative state, watching the machines live the life they used to live. The setting is a multi-story factory and office building. In the lower level, more and more robots are constantly being produced while the homeless humans watch and struggle to protest. The other levels are filled with office desks occupied by working robots that move through the space using the elevators and hallways. While comically, it seems like the robots are barely doing anything productive, they clearly have the power and the numbers. In one of the offices, one singular desk is still occupied by a human. A woman called Samantha Smith. Samantha communicates with her computer, talking about the way she sees herself compared to the way the computer sees her. The conversation does not seem voluntary for Samantha, as her computer grows alive with legs and arms and grabs her by the back of her neck, forcing her to keep intense eye contact before chasing her around. Together, they elevate from level to level while conversating, singing, dancing and ultimately merging into one. Samantha becomes a machine. Whether that is what she wanted or whether that is positive, nobody knows.

The music video was made entirely by Lorenz Foth. It is a 3D animation with hundreds of characters. The entire production design, character creation, rigging and all animations were made by Lorenz. The adapted robot characters were originally designed by Dr. Chao Wang. Lorenz’ work process started with 2D artistic sketches and storyboards, followed by the modelling process and the animation of all background elements and characters in the offices and factory. Then, Lorenz added the main characters and cameras to create the final shots for the video.
Video written, designed, directed, animated and produced by Lorenz Foth.
